My SG-1 saga was severely edited several times, first for errors that I should have noticed, and then entire scenes removed when I decided that, unless I'm deliberately writing something NC-17, the story didn't need the explicit sex. I wanted an actual story line, which didn't need the sex.
To flesh out the story -no pun intended- I added to the story to move it forward. I ended up with a 63-chapter saga. I'm very proud of it, even if it is a bit silly. Using fan fiction to learn how to write a story was good for me because the AU 0alternate universe) was already set with rules and basic structure. By the end of my X-Files series, White Picket Fences, written under the pseudonym Batela, I had begun adding original characters. With SG-1 I took it a step further and brought in new allies.
From there, around 2010, I self-published a completely original work, "In Plain Sight," a fantasy about a clan of pagans in the Pacific Northwest, and the discovery of 'little gray aliens.'
With all the help I received from friends and fan fiction writers that I enjoyed, I progressed in my skills. Helping others is always something I have enjoyed, so I began offering proofreading and editing services to other writers. No one has money for much of anything, so keeping my costs low was always a priority. Yes, the time it takes to work on a manuscript for someone should entitle me to a larger fee, but I want to help, not break someone's bank. My opinion on the content of their story doesn't matter; helping them publish a better looking manuscript does matter. I will explain why I change a few things, offer suggestions, but in the end it's their manuscript, not mine; they can accept or reject any changes I made, I will even tell them how.
Please give me a try.
